In this webinar Ruth Copson explores birth families experience of care proceedings and adoption.
In this webinar, Ruth Copson, an Independent Social Worker and Senior Research Associate, considers the life changing impact that adoption has on birth families, drawing on research exploring the experience of having a child placed in care and subsequently adopted.
Theories of loss and grief are considered to help build an understanding of how relatives may navigate the court process, as well as any ongoing relationships before and beyond the adoption order. The ongoing support needs of birth families after adoption are discussed, including around staying in touch arrangements.
“I think sometimes it is easy to forget as adoption practitioners, when we are caught up with the preparation of an adoptive placement with families we have assessed, that there is such significant loss for birth relatives. This was a really good reminder.” Webinar attendee.
This webinar will be helpful for adoptive (including prospective) parents, foster carers and professionals.
