Self-harm is common among children and young people who have experienced trauma, as well as those who are neurodivergent and experience intense emotions, communication barriers or chronic sensory overwhelm. Sensory processing differences can increase distress and make it harder for young people to express their needs before reaching crisis.
This webinar offers a clear, compassionate overview of self‐harm in these young people, exploring why it occurs, how sensory processing contributes, and what adults can do to provide safe, effective support.
It covers how to recognise early signs of distress, adapt environments to reduce sensory load, build predictable routines, and use sensory‐based supports. You will learn practical, relationship‐centred strategies that help adults create safety, reduce overwhelm and strengthen co‐regulation, as well as how to enhance communication, offer safer coping alternatives and work collaboratively with the young person, their carers and professionals to ensure consistent, neurodivergent‐affirming support across settings.
This webinar will be helpful for anyone parenting or working with a child or young person who has experienced trauma.
